Why this course?
IPC is a cross-cutting issue in health care. Strong, effective IPC programmes have the ability
to influence the quality of care, improve patient safety and protect all those providing care in
the health system. After obtaining inputs from various stakeholder World Health
Organization has formulated guidelines on the minimum requirements as well as how to
implement them in the field. The implementation of all WHO recommendations on core
components is required to build functioning programmes leading to the effective reduction of
HAIs and AMR.
Objectives of the module
After undergoing the training, participants would be able to
A. Recall the Minimum Requirements for all IPC workers:
1. Describe the 8 core components of a functional IPC
2. In depth review of minimum requires, the What, who, How and why of each core
component
3. The five step approach to implementation and improvement of IPC
4. Review evidence based Infection Prevention Guidelines
B. IPC focal person
1. define the roles and responsibilities of an IPC focal person;
2. describe the requirements of an IPC programme according to WHO core components’
guidelines;
3. demonstrate key leadership skills;
4. demonstrate conflict management and communication skills;
5. advocate for IPC as a priority in health care, as well as describing the need for
synergies with other programmes;
6. foster teamwork;
7. lead project development, management, and budget planning necessary for an IPC
programme;
8. describe key IPC implementation strategies, including considerations of behaviour
change and the application of multimodal strategies and campaigning
